SSI Intermediate certificate levels
What students learn at this level
This stage develops skills progressively. Coaches should adjust activities to the learner’s age, confidence, coordination and demonstrated readiness.
- More efficient freestyle and backstroke technique
- Progressive breaststroke and butterfly foundations
- Improved starts, turns, breathing rhythm and endurance
Who this level is for
Learners who can swim independently and are ready to refine multiple strokes over longer distances. A placement check helps avoid moving a learner forward before the foundation skills are secure.
How progression and certification work
Progress is based on demonstrated competence rather than a guaranteed number of lessons. The coach reviews technique, confidence, safety habits and consistency before recommending assessment or progression to Advanced. Certificate availability and assessment arrangements should be confirmed before enrolment.
How parents can support progress
Attend lessons consistently, bring suitable swimwear and equipment, and practise only the activities recommended by the coach. Ask for specific feedback on the next skill to improve rather than comparing lesson counts with another learner.
